Djinn without magic - Part 2

A few hours later, Martha’s shift ended. Her coworker, Babette, was done also with work for the day. “Hey Martha, wanna go and have a drink?”

“Sure, why not?” Martha replied.

At that moment, Amelia Maus entered the Lobby. When Babette spotted the maid, she asked her as well if she wanted to come along.

“Going to town to have a drink?” Amelia asked with frightful eyes. “I don’t know… I’ve never been to town before.”

“Then it’s time that you go with us! Ladies, I propose we change into more comfortable clothes and meet here in 30 minutes.” Babette said.

Martha agreed, but Amelia was uncertain again. “More comfortable clothes? What do you mean? I don’t have other clothes.”

“You don’t have any other clothes?” Babette was totally perplexed.

“I have my maid uniforms. Svetlana said I don’t need other clothes.” Amelia explained.

Babette’s mouth popped open. “Then we should go on a shopping spree first. You can’t go out in a maid uniform unless you want the wrong kind of attention. Amelia, get your bank card and we will go shopping.”

“My bankcard?” Amelia asked.

“Girl, don’t tell me you let Svetlana arrange your bank account too.” Babette was outraged now.

Nervously, Amelia nodded and started to nibble with her front teeth. “Martha, I… I wish I had a bank card and all I need.”.

“I’ll grant you that wish, but not at once. We will go to town and set everything right. First, we need to know the account your wages are payed to.” Martha explained.

“I can help you with this.” Babette interfered. “I helped M. Sprüngli with setting up the computer system a few years ago. I still have the password.” Quickly, Babette returned to the counter and started the computer.

A few minutes later, she knew everything she needed to know. “Your money is going to an account that is shared by you and Svetlana. I wouldn’t be surprised if she had it already plundered. You need your own account, Amelia; first things first. Let’s go to a bank and open a new one for you. Then we transfer what is left in this account to your new one and tomorrow, you tell M. Sprüngli that your wages go to the new account.”

“So Svetlana can’t take my money?” Amelia asked.

“That’s the plan. Just get your ID-card so you can open a new bank account. I hope you got one.” Svetlana gave Amelia a suspicious look.

“Yeah, I got an ID-card. Svetlana gave it to me. Just give me a minute to go and get it.” Amelia said.

“I have to go to my flat to change first. Instead of returning here, we better meet in the city.” Martha proposed. Amelia and Babette agreed.


About 45 minutes later, the three women met at a tram stop near Martha’s and David’s place. Martha had changed into casual clothes and so did Babette. Not very surprising, Amelia was still wearing her maid uniform. Unexpected, however was the German Sheppard dog she was leading on a leash.

“What’s about the dog?” Babette asked.

“He’s mine and he’s new. He hasn’t been taken out for a walk, so I took him along.” Amelia explained. Meanwhile the dog had discovered a spot where another dog has left its mark. Curiously, Amelia's dog sniffled on it but turned its head away in disgust.

“He doesn’t seem to feel very comfortable.” Martha objected.

“As I said, he’s new. Give him some time to acclimate to the new environment.” Amelia insisted. Martha and Babette nodded. The three women moved on to hit the town.
