Taking responsibility - Part 5B (Codeword: Mouse)

A few days had passed. David had just finished his inspections of the maids work, when he returned to the lobby. From a distance, he saw Amelia wish a patron a good voyage home. The patron left the hotel with a contented smile on her face. Suddenly, Amelia looked over at David. "Hello, David. Can you please come over? I have a question."

David went to the reception. "Hello, Amelia. Everything is going fine?"

"Yeah, but I got a question. A guest from Poland gave me his passport. So, I have to keep it until he leaves again?" Amelia asked.

"No, it's enough to make a photo copy, then you can give it back to him. You know, I can do that for you." David proposed.

"Thank you David, I can do that myself."

While Amelia took the passport to the copy machine, David decided to seize the chance. Since they had rescued Martha, Amelia and Babette from that strange, sleeping world, he tried to get a date with Amelia, but there was always Babette around. As David had learned, Amelia and Babette were still sharing a flat, and Babette was still working at the Hotel. But today was Babette's day off and so, Amelia was alone at the reception. Here was David's chance, and when Amelia returned, he asked her: "Hey Amelia, wanna go out this evening?"

Amelia though for a second. "That's a sweet idea, David. Although... Say David, would you mind if Babette tags along?"

Having Babette along with them wasn't exactly what David had in mind for this evening. "You're spending a lot of time with Babette, lately," he said, with a hint of accusation in his voice.

"We are sharing a flat." Amelia answered. "And after I wished her back from that sleeping world, Babette needed a lot of support from her friends. So, yes, we are doing alot of things together, lately."

"I see." Before he completely lost this chance to spend an evening with Amelia, he agreed on Amelia's condition. "Alright, Babette can come along too. How about the cinema? Is there a movie you want to see?"

"Actually, there is: How about 'The Great Gatsby`?" Amelia said. "I'm sure Babette will like it, too."

David was disappointed. There went the chance for a date with Amelia without Babette being around. But he couldn't back out now, so he checked the local cinemas on his phone. "Ok, I'll pick you two up at seven, then."

"See you later." Amelia said and returned to the work.


Later that evening, David, Amelia and Babette were sitting in the cinema. As David had feared, his intended date with Amelia had turned into a normal evening spent with his friends. They got something to eat then they headed to the cinema. Over dinner and then at the cinema, David saw Babette and Amelia exchanging glances now and then. At the cinema, David tried to enjoy the movie but his thoughts always wandered to Amelia and Babette. Finally, the credits rolled and David looked over to Amelia and Babette. To his horror, he saw both of them holding hands, just like a pair of lovers would do. David felt utterly disappointed. He tried not to show it to the girls. Instead, he stood up and led the ladies out of the cinema.

A short drive later, they arrived at Amelia's and Babette's flat.

"I hope you enjoyed the evening." David said.

"It was wonderful." Babette embraced David.

"Yeah, I enjoyed it a lot too." Amelia gave David a kiss on his cheek. For a moment, all three stood next to each other, feeling awkward. Amelia's eyes wandered towards her flatmate and so did Babette's eyes.

"You don't have to hide it from me." David eventually said.

"Hide what?" Amelia asked.

"That you and Babette are an item."

"Oh that..." Amelia lowered her head. "Listen, David... I'm sorry. I know that you still have feelings for me..."

"And I saved you from that sleeping world, don't forget that." David reminded her.

"I haven't. And I'm very grateful. But, Amelia basically did the same for me: when I was transformed into a mouse, it was Babette who wished me back to normal. While you..."

"I know." David interrupted her. "It's ok; you made your choice, Amelia, and I have to accept that. Have good night, you two." David turned away and returned to his car.

"David, wai..." Amelia shouted but Babette interrupted her by taking Amelia's hand and shaking her head.

"That won't work, Amelia. Of course he's disappointed now, what did you expect?" Babette asked. "Let's get inside, it's still chilly. Don't worry, I'm sure you will stay friends."

"I hope so..." Amelia said, and followed her lover.
