During the great break, Martha was standing on the school yard observing the students playing and running around. Suddenly, Martha heard the clatter of stones and two girls running by protecting their heads with their hands.
“What’s going on?” Martha asked. She walked towards the clatter to find its source. Eventually, she saw three boys throwing stones. She hasted towards them. “What do you think you are doing? “ Martha asked angrily.
„I’m showing Joaquim here, that I’m much stronger than him.“ one of the boys, answered. “See, I can throw a stone much further than him.” Like his comrades, he was tall and quite muscular. All three could be best described as jocks.
“Only in your dreams, Gualberto.” Said Joaquim. He took another stone and was about to throw it, when Martha quickly blinked and right in Joaquim’s hand the stone crumbled into sand.
“We are throwing stones, not dirt, Joaquim.” the third boy teased him.
“Shut up, Rafael.” Joaquim kneeled down to pick up another stone, and so did the other two.
“Stop it!“ Martha stomped her foot. „You three are nuts, throwing stones. Don’t you realize you are hitting other kids in the yard?”
While Rafael seemed to hesitate, it was too late for Joaquim and Gualberto. They had already let their stones fly.
„That’s it, you idiots!“ Martha yelled. „You three can’t be helped, but this ends now.” Martha blinked again and this time, the bodies of Gualberto, Joaquim and Rafael began to dwindle. Soon their athletic statues shrank into the bodies of outright weaklings. Thick glasses appeared on their faces and their clothes changed too. Martha had the three jocks not only transformed into stereotypical nerds, but also changed their history, so everybody would only remember them as three big nerds.
“You think you are smarter than me, Rafael?” Joaquim asked. “Tell me what is the 3rd root of 3723.875?”
Rafael thought for a moment. Then he answered. “Too easy! That’s 15.5! My turn.“
Martha shook her head and turned away. In some ways, the three boys couldn’t be helped. They were still competing with each other, but at least, they didn’t throw stones anymore or harm the other kids in another way.
“Miss dos Santos?” suddenly another female teacher addressed Martha.
Her name was Mrs. Ruiz and Martha remembered her from her own time at school. “Yes, Mrs. Ruiz? How can I help you?”
“If you have a few minutes, I’d like to talk to you about one of your students.” Mrs. Ruiz asked the genie-turned-substitute teacher.
Martha nodded. “Sure, we can talk now.”
Mrs. Ruiz nodded, he concerned look on her face. “You see, the student I’m talking about is your sister Catharina. I thought, as your sister, you might show her better how severe the situation is.”
Martha was worried now. “Sure. What’s wrong with my sister?” she asked.
