Part 6

Inside the room, Amelia headed straight for the cupboard where she had seen the lamp of Sami. But the lamp wasn’t there anymore. But, on the cupboard, she saw Gregorios' bottle. Amelia knew that it was dangerous to ask Gregorios for a wish, but if she was very careful, she might be turned back into the human she was formerly. With great effort, she uncorked the bottle. At once, the purple smoke poured out of the bottle and formed into the genie body of Gregorios.

“Who dared to call me?” Gregorios asked. “Oh, it’s you!”

“Do you understand me?” Amelia asked, though all that was audible was a series of squeaks. Gregorios didn’t react. “Damn, I wish you could understand me.” Amelia thought.

Gregorios blinked and a made a series of squeaking noises. For Amelia, however they made perfectly sense and sounded like “Your wish is granted, Mistress!”

“So, I’m your mistress now?” Amelia asked.

“That’s true.”

“And you are bound to the usual genie rules?”

“Sadly, I am. No killing, no bringing the dead back from the grave, no messing with free will and no wishing for more wishes.” Sami counted.

“And how many wishes do I get?”
“Only one wish! And I granted that already, muhahahah!” Gregorios laughed evilly. "And since I granted your wish already, you are no longer my mistress."

"Wrong! I asked you if I was your Mistress AFTER you granted my wish. And thus, I'm still your mistress until I release you from my service. "Amelia argued. "Thus, you must still answer my questions and obey my commands as long as it doesn’t count as a wish.”

“True!” Gregorios gnarled his teeth. This insignificant mouse had actually outwitted him. “Though the only command you can give me now is to release me from your service, since you already had your wish.”

“Then I ask you where Sami’s lamp has gone to.”

Again, Gregorios was not pleased. “Svetlana sold it to a pawnshop.”

“And where is the pawn ticket?” Amelia continued to asked.

Gregorios went quite furious, but he was obliged to answer that question too. “She threw it in the wastepaper basket over there.

“Thank you very much, kind genie. Now, I will release you from my service under the condition that you return to your bottle and that you never, ever tell anybody about what happened when I opened your bottle.” Amelia commanded.

“Noooo!!!” Gregorios cried as he was sucked back into the bottle. With her little front paws, Amelia put the cork back into the bottle. Then, she jumped from the cupboard and headed to the wastepaper basket to fetch the pawn ticket.

Meanwhile, outside the room, Svetlana had spotted Babette standing outside her closed door. "Hello, Babette. What brings you here?"

"I ... was looking for you, Svetlana." Babette lied.

"I see. How may I help you?" the maid replied.

"There's new club opening this weekend. Maybe you are interested..."

"No, thanks. I already have plans for the weekend." Svetlana tried to squeeze around Babette.

Amelia was still inside the room. Babette had to win more time. "Er... what happened to Andy? I haven't seen your dog in a while.”

“Andy? I sold him to Herrn von Schnitzler, the dog breeder. He says Andy is a very fine breed of German Shepherd and he made me a very good offer.” Svetlana was gleaming with joy.

“An offer you couldn’t refuse?” Babette tried to stall even more.

“I’d say so.”

Every second Babette could gain now gave Amelia a greater chance to escape. “I guess Andy will be a very happy dog, now?”

“You can say so. Now he’ll get all the bitches he wants.” Svetlana laughed. “Alright, now I have to go.“ She pushed herself around Babette and unlocked her door.

Babette was terrified. But when the door opened just a little bit, a brown mouse rushed out of the room, unnoticed by Svetlana. The mouse was carrying a slip of paper in its mouth. When Svetlana closed the door, the mouse passed the slip to Babette. It was a pawn ticket for an oil lamp. Babette looked at it. Then she said: “I’ll tell you what we will do. We will go there after my shift is over. Then, I will redeem the lamp. If everything works well, you can repay me the price, later. But for now, I have to go back to my shift.
