“Wanna go home?” Martha asked.

Sami nodded. “Thank you Martha!” he said.

“Why do you thank me?” Martha asked.

“It was good to talk to someone about what I experienced. I really appreciate that you listened to me. For the last 200 years, I longed tell somebody about what happened. For this, I thank you.” Sami took Martha hand.

In return, Martha tried not to blush. “You are welcome!” she said, trying not to show the warm feeling Sami’s words gave her. “I understand you much better now. I thought you just don’t like humans because they treated you like a slave. Now, I see that there’s much more. I always hoped to show you that not all humans are as evil as you thought.”

“I knew that already. Madelaine was the living example. For her, I would have given up my genie nature. But she was murdered by the egomania of human kind. And all positive things I saw in human kind died with her.” Sami lowered his head.

“Homo homini lupus est.” Martha said.

“Man is a wolf to his fellow man.” Sami translated. “I saw it way too much during the last 4000 years.”

“And still, mankind is capable of wonderful things.” Martha tried to convince Sami. “If you accept, that humans can be both, good-tempered and cruel, at the same time, you can get along with them pretty well.”

“You are idealistic. Please forgive an old genie. After 4000 years of slavery, I rather spend my time with a fellow genie, like you.”

Again, Martha tried not to blush. “In your current appearance, you would make quite a handsome human, Sami. I hope we can go out more often.”

“Well… Going out with you is definitely fun. I’m still a bit reluctant to meet a crowd of people, but with you, I’d go out more often.” Sami replied.

“Ok, we’ll take it slowly. If you don’t feel comfortable with a place, we don’t have to go there.” Meanwhile, Martha and Sami had strolled through the exhibition. Suddenly they stood in front of a marble statue. “The Marianne by Bernard Guy. Paris 1789.” Martha read the description. “Is that the statue you turned the servant into?” Martha asked.

“Why don’t you try to feel the magic?” Sami asked.

“What do you mean?” Martha gave Sami as puzzled look.

“Genies can feel the presence of other magic. They can even determine the magic signature of the caster.” Sami explained.

“But how? I don’t know it.” Martha felt so inexperienced.

“I’ll show you.” Sami stepped behind her and guided Martha’s hands. “Now try to reach out for her with your magic. Can you feel it?”

“No… Wait! There’s something. I can feel a magic presence. It feels like… like you?” Martha was quite amazed by the experience.

“That’s right. I transformed her so you can feel my magic signature. Can you feel even more?” Sami replied.

“I’ll try… Yeah. I can feel as presence trapped inside the marble. Is that her?” Martha asked.

“Yes, that’s her. But I doubt that you can find much consciousness after over 200 years.” Sami shrugged his shoulders.

Martha concentrated again. “No, I don’t feel any coherent thoughts inside. What happened to her?”

“She has adapted to being a marble statue. If a person is transformed and stays in their new form for too long, they adapt mentally to their new form.” Sami explained.

Martha grew silent for quite a while.

“What’s wrong?” Sami asked. “Are you feeling sorry for her?”

Martha shook her head. “I don’t feel sorry for her. She wished Madelaine into a statue, but in the end, she got what she deserved. No, I don’t feel sorry for her at all. I’m just wondering if I’m adapting do my new form too? To that of a genie?”

“I’d say so. You’re getting used to be a genie. Luckily, you feel comfortable with your new form. Otherwise, you would have become an ill-tempered genie.” Sami explained. “Martha, please promise to never lose your bright nature.”

Martha stood tip-toe. Then she kissed Sami on his cheeks. “Don’t worry. As long as you will be there for me, I won’t.”

Sami embraced Martha, then both continued her trip through the exhibition.

A few hours later, it was already late at evening, Martha and Sami returned to the hotel.

“I was…“
“It was…” both genies tried to speak at the same time. “You go first Sami!” Martha said.

“I have to thank you Martha. I really enjoyed this afternoon.”

“Really? I thought I brought back too bad memories?” Martha replied.

“I did. But it felt good to talk about it to somebody. Thank you for listening to me!” Sami took Martha’s hands.

“That’s what friends are for. I have to thank you too.” Martha replied.

“What for?”

“To teach me how to use my powers properly.” Martha smiled.

“Born genies learn these things from their elders. But you are not a born genie. That’s why converted genies often can’t use their full powers.” Sami blushed as he realized, that his words might have hurt Martha.

“Then you should teach me how to use my powers.” Martha slid close to Sami. This moment, the bell from a nearby church chimed midnight. “Is it already that late? I guess I should…”

“Won’t you come in for a cup of tea?” Sami interrupted her.

Martha pondered the thought for a moment. Then she shook her head. “No. I won’t come in for just cup of tea. But if you like, I can stay for the night.” She gave Sami a broad grin. In response, Sami said no word. He just embraced Martha. Holding to each other, both genies slid into Sami’s lamp.
